Is there a file trimming Tap available at all?

I found the default trimming impossible to use with any accuracy.

I don't know of any existing TAPs.

I'm looking into doing one. There are no functions in the TAP API to do it - and I'm looking at 2 alternatives:

1. sending the remote keys to the firmware to do the cut, or
2. looking at the firmware to see if there are any hidden functions to do it.

But it won't happen in the next week or two as I'm doing other fixes, or new things.

I can't recall exactly, but were you after some screenshots of PBK doing its Stop/Trim thing on a 5000?  I took some snaps for someone and I think I sent them to a Hotmail address. If not, and you'd like the same, let me know.

I was hoping it might be possible to have some kind of auto trimming TAP - eg as follows:
  • Set a bookmark at the start and end of a set of ads
  • run the Trimming TAP and it goes through and automatically cuts out what's between sets of bookmarks (you'd need to make sure you have pairs of bookmarks).

I sometimes record shows for the kids then transfer them onto their own little media player - and I currently go thru and manually cut out the ads which is time consuming and not very accurate. So I thought this might be handy - but have no idea if it's possible or easy etc?

Cheers
Ben

That would be great.

It would be good if you made one that actually cuts the file.

The standard trimmer must just hide the section of "trimmed" file as the file size doesn't change.

What machine do you have? TAPs only run on the newer machines and on those platforms it DOES change the size of the file. For the 7000/7100 boxes it doesn't but those don't support TAPs.

My mistake listening to an anti Topfield person.

He was referring to an older model, a 7000.

Perhaps I've been spoilt. I've had a Sony HXD870 Digital Video Recorder which, despite its limitations (it can only record files to its own hard drive or/and burn them to its own video recorder, and it can't see/record hd tv) has a great frame by frame edit facility which makes the process very quick. Coming to the Topfield (7100+), the very rough editing has been my only real disappointment. I cart everything over to VideoReDo via an esata drive, edit it, then store it on that drive to play back on the Topfield - minus inf files unfortunately. (Toppy Filemaker doesn't like the VideoRedo edited mpg files even though they play fine on the Topfield.)

You'll make a lot of people happy, John, if you come up with something that's an improvement on the current editing system.

Darcy, I have to admit that it is becoming challenging... There is no support in the TAP API for this so I'm basically trying to send keys to the firmware (just like a real edit) but if I reposition within the recording using the API, the firmware stops the editing workflow. If I reposition using the remote keys, I can't do fine-grained positioning. I'll keep trying but I'm not hopeful... I've even resorted to checking the firmware for undocumented calls (hacks) that might do this - but no success yet.
